Renuvi Energy teams with Energy Northwest to debut a first of a kind grid scale Battery Energy Storage System using Renuvi’s proprietary liquid sodium chemistry which promises to bring greater flexibility and greater energy density to the growing need for energy storage. The Renuvi system was created to deliver Always-On power, acting as a dispatchable energy reservoir which can be adjusted throughout the day to provide reliability and resiliency to a power grid.
RICHLAND, Wash., Nov. 13, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Renuvi Energy and RK Mission Critical have teamed with Energy Northwest, a Washington state joint operating agency, to submit a concept paper for a U.S. Department of Energy funding opportunity to develop a long-duration Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) pilot demonstration project. The collaboration aims to deploy a storage system that will be manufactured by RK Mission Critical using Renuvi Energy’s first-of-a-kind liquid sodium battery cell, a consumables-free design that offers a unique, flexible and resilient solution.
The pilot project will provide 10+ hours of flexible, clean, and dispatchable power to support communities in Franklin County, Washington. The pilot will demonstrate how the Renuvi BESS can enhance grid operations through peak shaving, load balancing, capitalizing on energy arbitrage opportunities, and improve management of distributed energy resources at scale. These measures are designed to mitigate outages, reduce demand during peak periods, and ensure that the grid is resilient and appropriately sized to handle increasing loads.
Due to the unique properties of the Renuvi system, it can be utilized repeatedly in a 24-hour period without shortening the battery’s lifespan. This allows immense flexibility for utilities to make critical decisions regarding load imbalances and power purchase options on a real time basis. This flexibility is enabled by Renuvi’s liquid sodium chemistry design, which is devoid of typical limiting factors such as short lifespans, high costs and high fire risk, of other battery designs. The novel chemistry allows for a theoretically infinite reversible reaction with virtually no degradation to the chemical properties of the battery cell. This allows for a unique Always-On capability which allows it to act as a continuous power buffer, leveling grid fluctuations and providing a reliable dispatchable energy reservoir. This is achieved using low cost, domestically sourced materials that have little to no risk of fire or thermal runaway and are ultimately recyclable.
