Join us for a delightful evening filled with dinner, dancing, new friendships and lasting memories!

“Living with kidney disease as a young person presents unique challenges. You miss school or events, have body image struggles, hospital stays, and face a lack of confidence—all while managing complex emotions. A friend can be invaluable in tough times.” Lori Hartwell, Founder, President RSN

“Living with kidney disease as a young person presents unique challenges that differ significantly from those encountered after an adult diagnosis. You may miss important events and school days, struggle with body image issues, endure hospital stays and surgeries, and experience a lack of confidence—all while trying to manage the complex emotions that come with being a teenager and a young adult. Time and again, I have witnessed the profound connections that develop, leading to lasting friendships. A single friend who truly understands this illness and listens can be invaluable in navigating the tough times. This marks my 26th Prom, making it the longest-running gathering of its kind that I know of.”– Lori Hartwell, Founder and President of RSN

This event is more than just a celebration; it is an opportunity for our community to unite, share hope, and support those who faced kidney disease in childhood. Let’s come together to create an unforgettable evening that promises joy, hope, and the opportunity to forge lasting friendships. Attendance is free, and each guest is welcome to bring a friend to share in this memorable night.

Chronic kidney disease in children can stem from multiple causes, including:

  • Reduced blood flow to the kidneys, blood loss, surgery, or shock. Other causes include blockages in the urinary tract and certain medications that may adversely affect kidney function. Conditions that impede oxygen and blood flow to the kidneys, such as cardiac arrest, may also contribute to kidney issues.
  • Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: This condition is often triggered by an E. coli infection, leading to kidney failure due to blockage of small structures and blood vessels within the kidneys.
  • Glomerulonephritis: This type of kidney disease affects the glomeruli, the filtering units of the kidneys, causing inflammation that disrupts the kidneys’ ability to filter urine properly.
  • Alport Syndrome: An inherited disorder that results in progressive kidney damage, hearing loss, and eye abnormalities.
  • Nephrotic Syndrome: A condition characterized by the presence of protein in the urine, low levels of protein in the blood, elevated cholesterol levels, and swelling of body tissues.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease: A genetic condition that leads to the formation of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys.

A child is more at risk if they are untreated for diabetes or high blood pressure. Regular checkups are important. If kidneys fail dialysis or a kidney transplant is the only treatment available. Learn more about kidney disease and youth here: rsnhope.org/kidney-disease-and-youth/

RSN would like to thank DaVita, the George Lopez Foundation, Ann & Mayan Lopez, U.S. Renal Care and Sandy Rose Legendary Floral Prop House for their support of this program.

Renal Support Network (RSN) is a nonprofit patient organization that was founded in 1993 by Lori Hartwell. Hartwell suffered kidney failure at the age of two, survived 50+ surgeries and 13 years of dialysis, and is now living with her fourth kidney transplant. She knows from firsthand experience the difficulty of navigating the myriads of emotions and the importance of being engaged in your care. RSN strives to help those who are newly diagnosed with CKD or on dialysis, as well as kidney transplant recipients. RSN’s goal is to empower people who have kidney disease to become knowledgeable about their illness, proactive in their care, hopeful about their future and make friendships that last a lifetime.
