Monster Energy is proud to welcome Australian pro BMX athletes Jaie Toohey from Lake Munmorah and Boyd Hilder from Queensland on Episode 317 of the sports and pop culture podcast UNLEASHED with The Dingo, Danny, and Brittney.

Recorded onsite in Ventura during X Games California 2023, the one-hour episode was initially broadcast live on the Twitch platform on July 23, 2023. Today, fans have the chance to tune in to the official recording of the episode featuring the two accomplished BMX riders: 32-year-old Toohey holds four X Games medals while 27-year-old Hilder has earned two, including one gold in the biggest action sports showcase on the globe.

Speaking on the special significance of X Games California in front of a sold-out audience, Hilder said: “I feel that the crowd is great once you start riding. But right before you are stressing. Because you want to do what you set out to do right now. The waiting is the hard part. I’m like a caged animal. I just want to go for it!”

In the world of freestyle BMX, Australia’s Jaie Toohey is known as a boundary-pushing trick innovator. Milestones include the world’s first backflip triple tail whip for the rider who was a later bloomer in contest performances. Toohey only made his X Games premiere at age 27 and took until age 30 to score his first medal. But since then, he’s been on a roll and now owns four medals from X Games. Fellow Australian Boyd Hilder barged onto the scene at X Games Chiba 2023 by claiming a surprise gold in BMX Street and also owns first-place trophies from contests such as Simple Session in Estonia. Find out what pushes these elite BMX athletes to elevate their riding and their entire sport – only on UNLEASHED!

Hear the inside story in conversation with the three podcast hosts, Australian action sports personality Luke “The Dingo” Trembath, professional snowboarder Danny Kass, as well as painter, model, and UFC ambassador Brittney Palmer. Tune in right here.

Hailing from Australia, Jaie Toohey is the latest addition to the Monster Energy BMX squad. “I grew up in Lake Munmorah, which is about 30 minutes from Newcastle, the major town there. Now I live on the Gold Coast.”

The innovative rider is gifted with all-round riding skills on ramps and dirt. But it took Toohey until the age of 27 to make his X Games debut. He still would not medal for another three years. But at X Games 2022, something clicked, and Toohey brought home double medals from a single contest. Today, he’s the latest addition to the Monster Energy BMX team. “I’m so stoked to be part of the Monster Energy family. It’s been a dream of mine, and it’s finally come true. Thanks for having me, guys!”

For Boyd Hilder, his first time was the charm when he earned a medal at X Games Chiba in Japan this spring. He squeezed into the BMX Street final at the last second as an alternate, only to rise all the way to the top and claim gold as a rookie. “I was the second alternate, and a couple of guys were injured. So I snuck in there. I was already an alternate in 2019 for BMX Park, so I was waiting for my chance. Underdog!”

Speaking on his beginnings in Australia, he said: “I grew up in Bundaberg. Nothing much to do there, so that’s why I rode BMX – local parks, dirt jumps, and BMX tracks.” Hilder since doubled down and claimed another medal at X Games California 2023.

Until recently, Hilder was earning money working at a warehouse in case the dream of BMX pro status would not materialize. Based in Australia, he uses the chance to travel and work on collecting footage. “Go over to Europe for the contests, work on a video part, and film some stuff while you’re there,” said Hilder.

After X Games California, Toohey now holds four X Games medals, including a bronze in BMX MegaPark earned at the SloanYard compound. Speaking on this latest feat, Toohey said: “We were pretty lucky all week because the wind was behind us. It was a tailwind. So it didn’t affect us. It wasn’t until the BMX Dirt finals when it became a crosswind, which made it more difficult to go over the jumps.”

This year also brought a strong second-place finish in the Monster Energy Triple Challenge of BMX Dirt contests for Toohey. When he’s not prepping for contests, the rider who landed the world’s first backflip triple tailwhip is working on his next-level trickery. Speaking on trick innovation in his interview, Toohey said: “It’s crazy to see where BMX was and where it is now. A year from now, just when you think something’s impossible, people are doing it every day now. The sport of BMX just keeps progressing and progressing.”
