Catholics for Choice Launches Advocate's Bible, a Guide for Pro-Choice Catholics and Allies

The Advocate’s Bible is a groundbreaking and comprehensive new resource that will equip the nation’s pro-choice Catholic majority with the tools and language they need to reclaim the moral high ground from the anti-choice religious right.

WASHINGTON, September 22, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Today Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, announced the publication of the 166-page “Advocate’s Bible: A Guide for Pro-Choice Catholics and Co-Conspirators.” The Advocate’s Bible is a groundbreaking and comprehensive new resource for pro-choice Catholics and allies about the science and laws around abortion; the history of the Catholic church’s teaching on abortion; the theological and ethical underpinnings of pro-choice Catholicism; and the racist, sexist, white nationalist roots of the anti-choice movement. It will equip the nation’s pro-choice Catholic majority with the tools and language they need to reclaim the moral high ground from the anti-choice religious right.

Catholics for Choice President Jamie L. Manson, M.Div., said:

“The Advocate’s Bible is a labor of love and justice that will help facilitate deep, informed conversations about abortion between pro-choice people of faith and their families, neighbors, and communities. For decades, the all-male Catholic hierarchy has viciously stigmatized abortion care and silenced the pro-choice majority in their pews. But now more than ever – when 1 in 4 abortion patients identifies as Catholic, the Catholic church controls 1 of every 6 hospital beds in the United States, and an ideologically-driven, majority-Catholic Supreme Court has just rewritten the law of the land to end the constitutional right to abortion – pro-choice Catholics need to make our voices heard and tell the extremists that they cannot attack fundamental civil rights in our name, or on behalf of our faith. The Advocate’s Bible will help pro-choice Catholics and co-conspirators do just that.”

Catholics for Choice is also announcing the launch of the Advocate’s Bible Study, an eight-week series designed to help users grapple with the material in a community-based learning setting. More than 560 supporters of Catholics for Choice have signed up for the Advocate’s Bible Study, which begins today – Thursday, September 22. It will feature skills-based workshops, email resources, and community discussion centered around our belief that we can be pro-choice because of our faith, not in spite of it.

Catholics for Choice Organizing Manager Steph Hanson-Quintana, M.Div., said:

“Through the Advocate’s Bible Study, pro-choice Catholics will learn to communicate more effectively with their communities and legislators about their pro-choice faith beliefs and refute the lies and misinformation of the anti-choice lobby. We look forward to grabbing our Advocate’s Bibles, gathering in community with our supporters, listening and learning together, and renewing our commitment to the struggle for liberation – from reproductive oppression and every other intersecting form of systemic violence.”

The Advocate’s Bible will also be an invaluable resource to healthcare providers who serve Catholic patients, elected officials who represent majority-Catholic constituencies and/or are pro-choice Catholics themselves, and partners in the work for reproductive freedom who wish to better understand the views and uplift the voices of pro-choice Catholics.
