American Banker Announces the NEXT 2021 Honorees, representing the future of leadership in financial services

NEW YORK, May 6, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — American Banker, Arizent’s essential resource for senior executives in banking and financial services, has announced the honorees of its third annual Most Powerful Women in Banking: NEXT program, highlighting 15 women who have demonstrated exceptional leadership over the past year.

The NEXT program celebrates women, ages 40 and under, whose achievements set them apart in their companies’ leadership pipelines. Among various qualifications, applicants must have an endorsement from a senior executive at their financial institutions and demonstrate C-suite potential to be considered for the list.

“All of the women on the list this year have been crisis-tested by a pandemic and social upheaval, and all have risen to the challenge,” said Bonnie McGeer, executive editor of American Banker and chair of the Most Powerful Women program.

  • Through the spike in prepaid card use caused by an unprecedented rise in unemployment payments, U.S. Bank’s Angela Ratliff tackled the accompanying growth in fraud so well her duties expanded to include handling disputes across other products.
  • One of Shaheena Khan’s employees was among the first at BMO Harris Bank to contract COVID-19, and her response became the playbook for the rest of the organization.
  • Five of the honorees are from community banks, reflecting the heightened importance such institutions took on during the crisis, particularly with helping small businesses get access to emergency financial aid through the Paycheck Protection Program. Among them are Candice Caruso at WSFS Bank, Tiffanie Horton at LINKBANK and Jennifer Reissman at Seacoast Bank.

“This next generation of women may be younger than those in our Most Powerful Women rankings, but I was blown away by how accomplished they are,” she added. “Their stories will inspire others across the industry.”

American Banker will recognize this year’s honorees through a unique virtual experience during its upcoming conference, NEXT: Sessions on Leadership (formerly known as LEAD), a three-day program gathering current and future change-makers to examine the most pressing issues facing industry executives, including the ways in which leadership needs to evolve to meet the challenges ahead. In addition to these banking leaders, the event will celebrate the NEXT honorees from the payments and insurance industries. The Digital Insurance honoree list will launch on May 10, 2021. The complete list of payments honorees can be found at

The NEXT virtual summit takes place May 18-20, 2021 and will feature senior thought leaders from Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, U.S. Bank, PNC Bank, Lincoln Financial Group, several community banks and many more. Additional information about the agenda, speakers and sponsors can be found at

The NEXT initiative continues the mission of supporting, empowering, celebrating and advancing women in the financial services industry, while also being a part of American Banker’s continued coverage of the progress in diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the banking industry. Since 2001, American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking and Finance ranking has recognized the professional achievements and influence of top-performing female executives in banking and financial services.
